Now for the bad news: the effectiveness of working from home varies significantly from person to person. You may have experienced this on your team or in your own tendency to check the fridge for the ninth time between calls to see if a new snack has materialized. Remote work is not a one size fits all solution.

And perhaps the worst news: it seems that firms offering distributed working policies are marked by less innovation, collaboration, and unity than their competitors with a traditional office setup. The happenstance interactions that take place in kitchens, hallways, and firm-sponsored events can ignite unusual partnerships. When people of different business units get to talking, it can foster cross-team ideation, new projects, and ultimately improved G&S for the end user. Over the long term, groundbreaking business ideas serve as a key determinate of whether a firm will flourish into maturity.²
